Code 8: Part II, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 film Code 8, continues the gripping saga of the Powers in Lincoln City. Directed by Jeff Chan, this Canadian science fiction action film delves deeper into a world where superhumans grapple with societal challenges and corruption.
Five years after the events of the original film, the Lincoln City Police Department (LCPD) has revamped its tech program. They’ve replaced most of their armed humanoid robots (known as Guardians) with non-lethal companion K9 robots, akin to dogs. Under the leadership of Sergeant Kingston, the project has been a resounding success, making the streets safer than ever.
Our protagonist, Connor Reed, fresh out of prison, works as a janitor at a youth community center run by Mina. He keeps his head down, trying to leave his past behind. Meanwhile, Garrett Kelton, another familiar face from the first film, controls an apartment complex called Towers. There, he runs an “ethical” drug empire, paying powered individuals for their spinal fluid to create the drug Psyke.
Enter Pavani and her older brother Tarak, who live in poverty within Garrett’s community. When Tarak’s desperation drives him to steal a bag of cash from Garrett’s gang, he gets caught by corrupt cops, including Sgt. King. To cover up the crime, King orders a K9 unit to hunt Tarak down, injecting him with Psyke to make it look like an overdose. Pav witnesses the murder and, using her rare ability, causes the robotic K9 to malfunction, allowing her to escape.
Pav seeks refuge at the community center, where Connor and Mina help her stay hidden from the LCPD. Connor, determined to broker a peace deal, turns to Garrett for assistance. But when he realizes that the mind-wiping process is erasing every memory Pav has of her brother, he fights to break her free. Together with Mina, they attempt to flee the city, only to be ambushed by Garrett and his crew.
As tensions escalate between Connor and Garrett, Sgt. King deploys robotic Guardians, ordering them to eliminate everyone on-site. Mina sacrifices herself, allowing Connor, Pav, and Garrett to escape. Detective Davis enters the scene, revealing that the only way to expose King’s crime is by breaking into his home and stealing the K9 unit, which holds evidence of Tarak’s murder in its memory.
The film was produced by Jeff Chan, Robbie Amell, Stephen Amell, and Chris Paré.
Code 8: Part II premiered on Netflix on February 28, 2024.
